(Swedish for “Liljevalch’s Art Gallery”) is an art gallery located on the Djurgården island in Stockholm, Sweden.

Designed by architect Carl Bergsten (1879–1935) and inaugurated in March 1916, it is today owned by the City of Stockholm.

Behind the entrance on the north-western corner is a small vestibule. To the right of the latter is a large sculpture hall leading to two large galleries with skylights intended for paintings, flanked by series of smaller exhibition spaces.

The eastern end of the building has a large-scale portico facing a small park surrounded by the large windows of a small restaurant.

One of the most appreciated exhibition spaces in Sweden, Liljevalch is renowned for its well-proportioned spaces in a range of sizes and its restaurant Blå porten “Blue Gate”. The concrete pillars and beams forming the structural framework of the building are left exposed as pilasters and mouldings in the façade with brick walls and a horizontal row of windows filling the spaces between them.
In front of and above the main entrance is a sculpture and a relief by Carl Milles.

The Liljevalchs exhibition programme is directed at both the wider public and those especially interested in a particular artistic output or art and designs.

The opening of each new artistic year is marked by the famous jury-selected Spring Salon.

The Liljevalchs art venue is the first independent, public museum for contemporay art in Sweden.

By the way the second picture from above is a painting of our future Queen princess Victoria, painted by Anna Kalinitchenko Jalpachik.

Swedish home-style food is currently being celebrated. Unlike the traditional food of many countries, that of Sweden has won popularity in many parts of the world. But preferably eaten in an historical environment.

Today the PELIKAN sits on the island called Söder (“South”) in central Stockholm. Built into a turn-of-the-century building, the pub, as well as its guests lives a good life in these Jugend locales. But today’s Pelikan is not only a creation of its own ancient history.

There is a very high ceiling in this house, at least six or seven meters.
An artist has decorated the building with animal and plant paintings in Jugend style, “Art Deco”, paintings directly onto the ceiling and walls. Wood panels cover the length of the wall’s lower half, into which benches have been built.

The guests are of all types. Artists come here, as well as musicians and actors. You can also meet everyone from left-wing politicians to stockbrokers.

If you go to Pelikan to eat, you’ll be eating rather Swedish. What is served at the PELIKAN is traditional Swedish “home-style” food. There are perhaps now also those readers who have tried the traditional food of different countries and so doing become scared off by such attempts. Don’t let that happen in Sweden.

The PELIKAN’S traditional food has become world-renowned over the years, smorgasbord being just one example. At Pelikan, you can try an SOS, which stands for “smör, ost and sill”, or butter, cheese and herring, or fried pork with onion sauce. To be extra genuine, you can have a “snaps” with the food or just go to socialized, drink from their amazing huge beer collection and do not be afraid to ask the well trained staff for their suggestions on which beer will suit your taste best.

The PELIKAN will indeed satisfied your need for a traditional swedish home made meal, leaving you with more than a fantastic experience. Don’t leave Sweden without a taste.

BOOK NOW! OBS! Swedes have dinner at 18:00 therefore make a reservation if you wish to have dinner around that time.

ADRESS: Blekingegatan 40, 116 62 STOCKHOLM.

TABLE RESERVATIONS: 0046 (08) 55 60 90 92 or 90.

Opening hours:

Monday- Thursday 16:00-24:00

There can be fewer more romantic places to visit during the winter months than Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. Pretty terracotta-coloured buildings are given an icing of frosty snow, while twinkling lights glitter from their windows. Although cold – temperatures regularly fall below freezing – if you wrap up warm, you’ll still be able to explore this beautiful city on foot. And, well, if it really does get too cold, you can always warm yourself up with a shot of Schnapps, or a glass of glögg.

What’s more, after you’ve discovered the best that Stockholm has to offer you can head up north on one of the many ski deals in Sweden that are available. One thing’s for sure, whether you’re stoked up on Schnapps in the city, or skiing down the piste, Sweden makes a great getaway in winter.

But before you plan your whole itinerary for your time in Sweden, read on to discover how to make the most of your budget by staying in apartments and houses as opposed to hotels.

Apartments v. Hotels

Luxury hotels are all well and good but when you’re travelling on a budget, there’s no denying you’ll be better off doing without them. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need to slum it with the teenagers in a hostel. Instead, you’ll find a happy medium in a well-chosen apartment.

Apartments offer a great alternative to hotels and mean your budget will likely stretch further when it comes to sightseeing. Forget smuggling bags of food from the supermarket into your hotel room, and embrace the convenience and space of your own kitchen with appliances and utensils so you’re able to cook up all sorts of feasts while away from home.

In this respect, staying in an apartment means not only will you save money on your accommodation, but you’ll also save on meals, too. What’s more, you won’t have to endure any of those formalities you’re never quite sure of when you stay in a hotel. For instance – is breakfast a serve-yourself affair, do you wait to be seated, are you allowed more toast and so on and so on! Staying in an apartments lets you enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner how you like, and leaves more time (and cash) for the important business of getting out and about exploring.

There is a great range of apartments available at Cocoon Stockholm, but if it’s a romantic place to stay that you’re after, have a look at this 15th century apartment located in the old town that’s available for four people from 49 Euros per night. With its cool basement living room with exposed arched brick ceiling, it makes a comfy bolthole and base for exploring the city.

Experience Life Like a Local

If you’re travelling to Stockholm in a big group of people, renting a house for your stay could work out much more cost efficient than staying in a hotel. What’s more, not only will you all have more space to roam, but you’ll also have accommodation that makes you feel instantly at ease. And the best thing about staying in a house? No having to share the facilities with people you don’t know and no annoying guests keeping you awake at 2am!

Renting a house for your stay will give your time in Stockholm a more homely feel. And if you’d rather rent a house outside the city, Cocoon Stockholm has plenty to choose from. Take for example, this blue wooden house in Saltsjöbaden, 10 miles outside Stockholm.

This cute house sleeps five people, has its own sauna, a homely living room kitted out with comfy sofas and a rocking chair and has plenty to see nearby, too. Base yourself here and you’ll be just a five-minute walk from the water, and only 700m from the train station – which means there’s no definite need to rent a car. And although you might not want to use it in winter, this place comes with its own private garden, too.

One more thing to consider is whether you’re a city slicker or a country bumpkin. Stockholm is packed full of apartments which means city lovers can get to grips with this place while staying in the heart of it. If, however, you prefer spending time out in the countryside and coming in to town for sightseeing and shopping, then a house is probably more your thing.

Either way, make sure you check out our great range of apartments and houses before you book your flights. There’s bound to be something that ticks the right boxes…
