THE PELIKAN RESTAURANT

Swedish home-style food is currently being celebrated. Unlike the traditional food of many countries, that of Sweden has won popularity in many parts of the world. But preferably eaten in an historical environment.

Today the PELIKAN sits on the island called Söder (“South”) in central Stockholm. Built into a turn-of-the-century building, the pub, as well as its guests lives a good life in these Jugend locales. But today’s Pelikan is not only a creation of its own ancient history.

There is a very high ceiling in this house, at least six or seven meters.
An artist has decorated the building with animal and plant paintings in Jugend style, “Art Deco”, paintings directly onto the ceiling and walls. Wood panels cover the length of the wall’s lower half, into which benches have been built.

The guests are of all types. Artists come here, as well as musicians and actors. You can also meet everyone from left-wing politicians to stockbrokers.

If you go to Pelikan to eat, you’ll be eating rather Swedish. What is served at the PELIKAN is traditional Swedish “home-style” food. There are perhaps now also those readers who have tried the traditional food of different countries and so doing become scared off by such attempts. Don’t let that happen in Sweden.

The PELIKAN’S traditional food has become world-renowned over the years, smorgasbord being just one example. At Pelikan, you can try an SOS, which stands for “smör, ost and sill”, or butter, cheese and herring, or fried pork with onion sauce. To be extra genuine, you can have a “snaps” with the food or just go to socialized, drink from their amazing huge beer collection and do not be afraid to ask the well trained staff for their suggestions on which beer will suit your taste best.

The PELIKAN will indeed satisfied your need for a traditional swedish home made meal, leaving you with more than a fantastic experience. Don’t leave Sweden without a taste.

A WINTER HOLIDAY IN STOCKHOLM

There can be fewer more romantic places to visit during the winter months than Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. Pretty terracotta-coloured buildings are given an icing of frosty snow, while twinkling lights glitter from their windows. Although cold – temperatures regularly fall below freezing – if you wrap up warm, you’ll still be able to explore this beautiful city on foot. And, well, if it really does get too cold, you can always warm yourself up with a shot of Schnapps, or a glass of glögg.

What’s more, after you’ve discovered the best that Stockholm has to offer you can head up north on one of the many ski deals in Sweden that are available. One thing’s for sure, whether you’re stoked up on Schnapps in the city, or skiing down the piste, Sweden makes a great getaway in winter.

But before you plan your whole itinerary for your time in Sweden, read on to discover how to make the most of your budget by staying in apartments and houses as opposed to hotels.

Apartments v. Hotels

Luxury hotels are all well and good but when you’re travelling on a budget, there’s no denying you’ll be better off doing without them. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need to slum it with the teenagers in a hostel. Instead, you’ll find a happy medium in a well-chosen apartment.

Apartments offer a great alternative to hotels and mean your budget will likely stretch further when it comes to sightseeing. Forget smuggling bags of food from the supermarket into your hotel room, and embrace the convenience and space of your own kitchen with appliances and utensils so you’re able to cook up all sorts of feasts while away from home.

In this respect, staying in an apartment means not only will you save money on your accommodation, but you’ll also save on meals, too. What’s more, you won’t have to endure any of those formalities you’re never quite sure of when you stay in a hotel. For instance – is breakfast a serve-yourself affair, do you wait to be seated, are you allowed more toast and so on and so on! Staying in an apartments lets you enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner how you like, and leaves more time (and cash) for the important business of getting out and about exploring.

There is a great range of apartments available at Cocoon Stockholm, but if it’s a romantic place to stay that you’re after, have a look at this 15th century apartment located in the old town that’s available for four people from 49 Euros per night. With its cool basement living room with exposed arched brick ceiling, it makes a comfy bolthole and base for exploring the city.

Experience Life Like a Local

If you’re travelling to Stockholm in a big group of people, renting a house for your stay could work out much more cost efficient than staying in a hotel. What’s more, not only will you all have more space to roam, but you’ll also have accommodation that makes you feel instantly at ease. And the best thing about staying in a house? No having to share the facilities with people you don’t know and no annoying guests keeping you awake at 2am!

Renting a house for your stay will give your time in Stockholm a more homely feel. And if you’d rather rent a house outside the city, Cocoon Stockholm has plenty to choose from. Take for example, this blue wooden house in Saltsjöbaden, 10 miles outside Stockholm.

This cute house sleeps five people, has its own sauna, a homely living room kitted out with comfy sofas and a rocking chair and has plenty to see nearby, too. Base yourself here and you’ll be just a five-minute walk from the water, and only 700m from the train station – which means there’s no definite need to rent a car. And although you might not want to use it in winter, this place comes with its own private garden, too.

One more thing to consider is whether you’re a city slicker or a country bumpkin. Stockholm is packed full of apartments which means city lovers can get to grips with this place while staying in the heart of it. If, however, you prefer spending time out in the countryside and coming in to town for sightseeing and shopping, then a house is probably more your thing.

Either way, make sure you check out our great range of apartments and houses before you book your flights. There’s bound to be something that ticks the right boxes…

Swedish holiday SANTA LUCIA!

Posted in Activities by admin - Nov 04 2011

SANTA LUCIA

This Monday, December 13th, is St Lucia Day… an important day is the Swedish holiday calendar and one of the most beautiful of Swedish traditions. The main tradition is that of a parade of white clad singers holding a candle, led by a young woman (Lucia) with a wreath of candles in her hair. They sing the Lucia song while entering, followed by Christmas carols. This procession will take place in homes, schools and churches all through Sweden on Monday. In homes the processions are made up of the children in the family coming into their parents room in the morning. Elsewhere the Lucia is often elected. Check out videos on youtube to get a better idea of the ceremony.

As a visitor to Stockholm, your best chance of witnessing this tradition is either in a church or at Skansen. Churches can have one or two processions/concerts during the afternoon and evening. There is generally an admission fee and tickets should be bought ahead of time as this is quite a popular event. While churches provide perhaps the most beautiful setting, the downside is that the church service will be generally done in Swedish and may be a bit hard for tourists to understand! The other option is Skansen.

This is Stockholm’s outdoor cultural museum and zoo and a great place to experience genuine Swedish traditions. Here you will find Lucia celebrations going on all day and into the evening… There will be four Lucia concerts in the Seglora church (12:30, 2:00, 3:30 and 5pm), otherwise the main Lucia procession & concert (with the official Lucia of Sweden) will be at the Solliden stage at 6pm. Please remember that most of Skansen is outdoors, so dress accordingly! The easiest way to get to Skansen from the Rival Hotel is to take the Djurgårds Ferry from Slussen (a 10 minute walk from the hotel).

What to wear in an ICE COLD adventure!?!?

Posted in Did you Know? by admin - Oct 25 2011

WHAT TO BRING ON YOUR WINTER ADVENTURE?

All of the winter/thermal clothing for our stay in Lapland is provided (boots, hats, snowsuits, gloves), so you just need to bring the minimum amount of clothes to wear for traveling, for our time in Stockholm, and additional clothes for Lapland and the IceHotel. Keep in mind that the average daytime temperature in Stockholm in February and March is about 30 degrees F. Temperatures in the north are colder, but it is a “dry” cold, which always feels warmer than a damp cold!

Here is a suggested list of clothing and other items:

Clothes for Stockholm and Kiruna such as comfortable walking shoes, casual slacks, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, coat, lightweight hat, gloves, etc…, similar to what you would wear in the winter in Chicago. You might also want to bring a small, lightweight umbrella.

Clothes for the IceHotel and Lapland

.-Thermal Underwear. You will wear this under your thermal snowsuit, or under casual pants and wool or fleece sweaters. Select medium-weight thermal underwear which includes a long-sleeved thermal top and bottoms. Synthetic (polypropylene/capilene) is great and will wick moisture away from your body. Also bring a few turtleneck shirts (such as capilene), that also wick moisture.

.-Warm wool or fleece sweater(s). A lightweight 200 weight synthetic fleece garment is recommended, or a light wool sweater or two.

.-Socks. Two or three pairs of wool/polypropylene socks to wear inside your boots (Smartwool or Thorlo brand). They should be socks that will wick moisture from your feet. You might also bring a lightweight pair of socks (cotton) to wear in your sleeping bag.

.-Daypack. A lightweight, waterproof nylon daypack, rucksack, or similar bag with shoulder straps. You’ll carry your water bottle, camera, extra film, etc., during our daytime excursions and wilderness overnight. This can also be used as your carry-on bag on the airplane.

Water bottle. A one-quart bottle with an attached lid. This is always an essential AdventureWomen recommendation, especially in cold, dry climates, where physical activity is dehydrating. In addition, it is always best to have a full water bottle on long airline trips, as it is important to drink lots of water while flying. Keep it in your carry-on bag (or your day pack, if you are using that as a carry-on.)

.-Sun block and lip protector (chapstick) with sunscreen.
Good quality sunglasses/goggles. The glare from the snow/ice can be quite penetrating, even when the sky is overcast.

.-3-4 cotton bandannas (much better for blowing your nose into than paper tissues), and also useful for cleaning camera lenses.
A pair of lightweight binoculars is always fun (but optional). We recommend Nikon, Minolta, Pentax of 7 X 28 or 8 X 20 (general game viewing binoculars that we suggest for our safaris.)

Camera and plenty of film. Also make sure to bring plenty of extra camera batteries, as cold runs any battery out fast.

.-Earplugs may be useful if sharing a room with a snorer (we do, however, change roommates each time we change locations!).

.-Toiletries, underwear and pajamas.

.-Lightweight travel alarm clock and a small flashlight.

.-Bathing suit (optional) for sauna or dips in ice holes!

IF STOCKHOLM OPEN

Is played on hardcourt and is part of the ATP Tour’s 250 series. It has been played annually for over 40 years. Tennis stars of the world gather at the Royal Tennis Court (Kungliga Tennishallen) to compete.

Stockholm Open was the brain-child of the veteran tennis star Sven Davidson. In March 1969 he received a letter from Dallas asking him to arrange a competition in Sweden with WTC contract pros plus more or less ‘white’ amateurs from all over the world, including Sweden.

You can read about the 32 Stockholm Open tournaments – now called If Stockholm Open and arranged by the Royal Lawn Tennis Club, Salk and the Stockholm Tennis Association – in the HISTORY year by year.

If Stockholm Open took place on Saturday. A lot of exciting matches were randomly drawn for the first round of the tournament, perhaps the toughest between Marcos Baghdatis and Milos Raonic.

“It is a crazy game that is completely wide open. Here we have two guys who just as easily could have met in the semifinals or finals”, says marketing director Jonas Björkman.

Seeded first in the tournament is the Frenchman Gaël Monfils and on the opposite side we find Juan Martin Del Potro. The third- and fourth seeded players are Stanislas Wawrinka and Juan Ignacio Chela. But even if the four top-seeded players make it through the first round, they still must play their best to go far in the tournament.

“It’s an incredibly strong lineup this year. You cannot point out an obvious favorite, anyone can take the title”, says tournament director Thomas Johansson.

Michael Ryderstedt was drawn against a qualifier in the first round. The Swede, who has been a bit under the weather recently, will play at the earliest on Tuesday and will have more time to prepare.

“It’s not an easy draw to go up against a qualifying player, given that all four qualifiers may well be ranked among the top 100 and are coming with great confidence after three straight wins”, says Jonas Björkman.

Let the games begin stockholm!

ICE HOTEL

What is ICE HOTEL? A hotel built of ice and snow, would be the most common response. The first and the largest in the world, someone might add.

Like most companies, they have a history and a business concept. Their ideas originally come from the place where the ICE HOTEL stand’s on ” Jukkasjärvi” in Lapland and northern Norway for over 20 years.

ICE HOTEL is fully and comprehensively insured to operate any excursions and activities . The river Torne that flows outside the windows, the cold arctic climate, the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun and more of what you can enjoy!

Every season they allow themselves to get inspired by the river, whether it is crystal clear ice, rapids shooting on a riverboat or a magnificent, recently caught grayling.

This is what they promise to offer to the rest of the world; with Jukkasjärvi and Torne River as a starting point, develop and offer sensuous, inspiring and unique experiences within art, nature, accommodation and gastronomy. That reflects all seasons of the year at the Ice hotel.

So it is not a only a hotel they build each winter, it is an ephemeral art project. And it is not a menu they create for every season, they also cultivate the many flavours of Swedish Lapland.

Each year, ICE HOTEL attracts visitors from all over the world to a little village in Lapland, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. Many of them go further north, explore the high mountains, all the way to the northern Norway to visit the fjords.

Many of their experienced ice artists, some of them have never experienced temperature below sub zero. Experienced or not, each year they create new and unique art and design at ICE HOTEL.

When the hotel is completed, a hectic time begins. Thousands of guests will sleep in rooms made of ice and snow, and experience many other activities such as dog sledding, you can feed the moose’s and deer’s , ICE sculpting, go on the northern light’s tour, skiing, also over hundred couples will share wedding vows in the ICE church and many cold drinks will be enjoyed in ABSOLUT ICEBAR.

Until spring arrives and the sun starts to unthaw the walls of snow and they finally close the hotel and let it slowly return to its origin, Torne River.
